Notes: Just shy of his 26th birthday, George, a farm labourer living at Yuulong, enlisted in the Army and served in the Infantry. He disembarked in the Middle East and five months later was missing in action, officially reported as a prisoner of war on 8/8/1941. After more than two years as a POW George and several other prisoners escaped and made their way through the treacherous mountains and into Switzerland and freedom on 6/10/1943. Twelve months later they were on their way home.
